Mr Grey will see you now. Oh, I mean Edward Grey, not the young and everything-perfect billionaire Christian Grey.

Secretary (2002)

Directed by: Steven Shainberg

Written by:  Steven Shainberg (screenplay), Erin Cressida Wilson (story), Mary Gaitskill (novel)

Starring:      Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Spader

James Spader may not be as hot as Jamie Dornan, but this film is waaaayyyyy better than "50 Shades of Grey".

The story is about a witty and intensive relationship betweeen a sexually dominant boss and his submissive secretary. When these two found each other, it seemed to be a perfect match, However, Mr Grey was a bit shame in his habits. His submissive Lee kept on pushing him, and they ended up live on their life happily together.

It is a rather genuine romantic story, which a hinky spice of slapping and cosplay. I saw real chemistry among the two leads. It was always fun to watch scenes among them. One pushes forward , and one backs down. Great tension.

I love the background story of Lee. Being a victim of domestic abuse, she seeks distraction through pain from self-harm. She then developed a awkward personality. It was Mr Grey that encourage her to break free and embrace herself. This must be a breaking performance for Maggie Gyllenhaal back then. She did a brilliant job.

It's a bizzare love story. We might not fully understand the mechanism or the attractiveness of Sadomasochism, but the person involved seems happy, so be it.

Great song to go with the film.
