Remember the scene in "Star trek Into Darkness", where Benedict Cumberbatch yelled "My name is Khan~"?
My Name is Khan (2010)
Directed by: Karan Johar
Written by: Shibani Bathija
Starring: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol
There are hundreds of film made in Indian each year. Only 1 to 2 film would be showed in HK cinemas. For those who made it, they must be the best of the best, just like "3 Idiots".
I enjoy Bllywood films. They are long, normally about 3 hours. Their contents are exceptionally rich. The same film can make you laugh, also can make you cry. The storyline is very comprehensive. Of course, never short of some signature Bollywood dance number.
This film is 165 min long, less dance time. Khan is an Indian Muslim with Asperger's syndrome. The film is about his struggle as being a misfit in the society. The film covers conflicts and discrimanations on race, religion and handicap issue. He faced the problems in India (Muslims vs Hindu) . His mother fought for him. Later, he and his brother's family moved to US. He met the love of his life, a single mom called Mandira. However, after 911, americans were terrified. They were terrified by Muslims. They were terrified by someone named Khan. Khan demanded for justice. He wanted to meet the president of the USA and told him that "My name is Khan, and I am not a terrorist."
A heart-breaking scene.
For me, this is more than entertainment. This is materials of moral education.
Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are mega-star in Bollywood. They are both very attractive actors. They delivered brilliant performances.
I was a bit surprised to see that this is distributed by 21st Century Fox. It's quite obviously that this film targets foreign market though. Less Bollywood, more Hollywood. Bollywood is really keeping up their game. Can't wait to discover more great Bollywod films like this.
