Bluffing kfooz

As I work on a shift base, my schedule is rather flexible. Therefore, I've bought 6 tickets from this years's HKIFF. Well, in fact, I've just watched 5 of them. It's a wide range of films. 

The Unknown Known (2013)

I enjoy watching documentaries. I learn a lot from them. This film is about Rumsfeld, former Secratary of Defense, who played a leading role in resurrecting USA military involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq during George W. Bush's tenure. He is known for his outspokenness and linguistic tactic. I wish I have better understanding of the context the film discussed about. Without Chinese subtitles and throughout knowledges on USA politics, it's a bit hard to read every conotation in the film. After all, I think I am too used to YYETS ;P Despite that, I still find the film inspiring. 

Abus de faiblesse (Abuse of Weakness) (2013)

It's a weird film describing a weird relationship. It's the real life story of director Catherine Breillat. I guess we will never understand the nature of the relationship between the two protagonists. To Maud, Vilko is closer than her family. Whenever she needs anything, she called Vilko. Is it because she thinks he's a debtor and thus is resposible to look after her, or she relies on him because he brought new meanings to her life? I don't relate Vilko as a super bad person. He did take care of Maud when she's alone and vulnerable. He didn't force her to give him money, he just asked, like a child asked his parents for money. I don't sense any sexual in this relationship. It's more like a mother-and-bad-son one, especially her real family are so distant. It must be hard for Breillat to face this experience again and put it to the big screen. A big shout out for the amazing performance by Isabelle Huppert. 

Shirley: Visions of Reality (2013)

I watched it after work and I fell asleep several times. But, it's my bad, I was too tired. It realises 13 remarkabke paintings by American realist painter Edward Hopper. It is magical to see those paintings come to life. Deutsch introduce Shirley as the main character of these paintings and put her throught signifigant times of America. He gave her a life story and an independent mind. It is am admirable idea. The context is American in the past decades. Again, I am not familiar about it. I don't really relate to her. 

And yes, I also bought the ticket for a french biographical fim called "Violette". It's about Violette Leduc, a French novelist, and her aquatance with Simone de Beauvoir. I was sick. I hope maybe I can catch up this film somewhere else.
