This film turns director Steve McQueen to a household name of all sort of film award cerenomies.

12 Years a Slave (2013)

Directed by: Steve McQueen

Written by:   John Ridley (screenplay), Soloman Northup (book)

Starring:       Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong'o, sarah Paulson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brad Pitt

The story is based on the real life story of Soloman Northup, who was kidnapped and sold as a slave to a platation owner for 12 years. Being an account of slavery, it stated the brutality of this dark history, but it doesn't drowned in sorrow. It rather focuses on different people's attitudes towards the situation. The film is emotional, but it will not be too umcomfortable to watch. Its honesty is what made this film so infectious.

Steve McQueen is the first black director that won Best Picture in Oscar. It must be very personal to him.

This films also blessed by a bunch of awesome actors. A role of lifetime for Chiwetel Ejiofor. A impressive debut performance by Lupita Nyong'o, a recent fasion icon.

This is the 3rd collaboration between Michael Fassbender and Steve McQueen. They hit it off in their previous work "Hunger" and "Shame". Fassbender thanks McQueen repeatedly for giving him the chance to shine. I think, on the other hand, it was Fassbender that brought certain depth. The actor is a master of agony! His performance gave me chills yet again. Definitely one of the best actors of his generation.

Here is one memarable scene from the film. The close-up shot of Chiwetel Ejiofor is genius. You can't look away but feel what Soloman is undergoing.
