A South Korean film starring an all-star Hollywood cast. It’s not so typically Hollywood, it’s a pretty cool film.
The beginning and the setup is very promising. Global warming hits the Earth badly. Countries decided to ease the problem by emitting a gas called CR7 into the atmosphere, trying to cool down the climate. However, it led to a resurrection of ice age. The survivors are carried by a magnificent train with a closed ecosystem. Passengers are divided into 3 classes. The train is like a micro stratified society. I love that concept.
I enjoyed the movie, for most part. I love the flow and the tension built section by section. Some scenes are beautifully shot and brilliantly edited. Some impressive scenes included how the tail section people collectively stop the doors from closing with oil drums, the making of the protein blocks, the hilarious but disturbing school scene, and of course the fighting scene with the butchers. Cheers for the matches!!
However until towards the end, when things have gone too far, you’d realize that no way the film’s gonna wrap things up in a reasonable way. The end is confusing. You would spot out plot holes. You would have many unanswered questions in mind, e.g. why a train like that would need handymen (or handykids)? Why those masked men fighting against the leads? Where did that polar bear come from? I thought every living thing were dead?
Last but not the least, applause to Tilda Swinton. She is the scene-stealer of the film. An amazing actress.
